Hear, you peoples, all of you;

      pay attention, O earth, and all that is in it,

                  and let the Lord GOD be a witness against you,

      the Lord from his holy temple.

            3       For behold, the LORD is coming out of his place,

      and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth.

When my brother Todd and I got a bit rambunctious at bedtime in our horseplay, aka fighting, and we heard the recliner closing up and  our Dad’s footsteps coming our way, we knew that the blows were over for the night, if we were fortunate. Micah told Israel and Judah that there were footsteps coming and God knew all that they were up to. They had become rich and complacent and had exploited the poor in the land. What’s more, God saw it all and, according to his promise, he brought destruction on the tribes of Israel in the north and they were routed by the Assyrians in 722 BC. They were warned as, I am sure, my brother and I were.

But there was  also a promise of love and mercy. That is our comfort today, knowing the whole story from the Fall in Genesis to the Restoration of all things in Revelation. We are in a rough patch as the world rejects the Lord and ignores the hurting in the world. Jesus warned us of these times and, according to his promises, will rescue his people as he rescued Israel and Judah. There are still footsteps coming when Jesus returns as judge but, according to his promises, we are shown mercy and forgiveness.

Dear Lord, thank you for the grace to know that you are coming in power, we are assured of your salvation and blessing. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
