For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. 3 Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.

Shrinkflation has been in the news lately. It is hard to notice that the fun size candy bar is not much fun anymore because it is half a bite-size. I have coined a new one. Junkflation. The diminishing quality of products is very evident while the price increases. The author of Hebrews gives us an alternative to the worsening state of our goods. His name is Jesus Christ and he is the better high priest, indeed, the Great High Priest. To settle for any other is Junkflation. The calling of ministers today has the following in common with the high priest because we are not priests. We are fellow sinners and we are appointed by God.

Only Jesus can absolve us of our sins and he has done it once and for all. His ministers are servants that merely proclaim the perfect sacrifice made on the cross for all of us who believe. May we remember that our ministers are fallible servants that also need shepherding and that the Great High Priest is shepherd of us all! What a joy! Let us all worship the better High Priest for this better covenant in his blood.

Dear Lord, thank you for the New Covenant and that we no longer need any sacrifice because of Jesus. Help us to remember that we are all the sheep of his pasture. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
