Psalm 2:1-4

Why do the nations rage

      and the peoples plot in vain?

            2       The kings of the earth set themselves,

      and the rulers take counsel together,

      against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying,

            3       “Let us burst their bonds apart

      and cast away their cords from us.”

            4       He who sits in the heavens laughs;

      the Lord holds them in derision.

It is comical to watch a small child think they pulled one over on the grownups. Usually, the adults allowed it to happen and shared a laugh about it after the child left the room. God is in his heaven and nations and their inhabitants think they are getting away with their sin and deceit. They are like these toddlers giggling in vain. God knows everything that his enemies are planning and laughs at their arrogance. The people who have set themselves against the Creator are making havoc, not for God, but for themselves. They who plot against the Lord plot in vain.

The world today is seemingly in the hands of those who are in positions of power, or so they think. God watches in heaven,looking like an interested spectator, but he knows and controls everything they are doing and thinking. Even Christians in their private rooms think they are getting one over on God, as if they are getting away with their sin. In a sense, they are, but only because of the shed blood of His Anointed. Our plotting was very costly but it was God who paid the price. May we remember that next time we think God is not watching.

O Heavenly Father, you know our hearts, our minds, and our private desires. May they match your perfect plan for mankind through Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
