1 Corinthians 13:12

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

There are auditory learners, those who learn through hearing, and then there are those who need to see it. They are visual learners. Much has been made of the idea that these distinctions are overblown but everyone favors one method to an extent. Paul seems to be a visual learner to such an extent that it appears when he sees God, when the blinders are off, he will know everything there is to know about God. Not so fast. Paul is not exactly saying that. He will know him in a new way but God is infinite. In order for Paul to know all about an all knowing God, he would need to be all knowing himself. This is impossible. Therefore, Paul can know him truly but no one can know him fully, in his entirety.

That is a comfort to us because, as Wayne Grudem says, he is awesome and powerful and it is that power that can save us. If we finite beings could know God completely, he would be too small to win the war against sin and death because he would not be infinite. Only an infinite God can be perfectly holy and just. Praise the Lord that he reveals himself in creation, the Bible and, the Son Jesus Christ! Now we can have the mind of Christ, not all knowing but God knowing. We know who he is and can worship him.

O Heavenly Father, you are the all knowing God who knows our hearts and our needs. We worship you for revealing yourself so we can love you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
