1 Peter 1:12

It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.

There was a Brady Bunch episode where Bobby becomes Hall Monitor and before long, he doesn’t have a friend in the world because the power went right to his head. The Apostle Peter knew that he was called to serve and not Lord it over others because Jesus told the disciples,

“…whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Peter, though he made many mistakes, was able to remember the example of Jesus and instruct his “fellow elders” not to lord it over the flock. Too bad that didn’t catch on!

Like Bobby Brady, we are all too susceptible to the threat of pride and the quest for power. It has caused world wars on a global scale and marital strife in the family circle. No one was more susceptible than the prophets. They heard directly from God! However, they were servants, not masters. They were vessels that were used by God to communicate his plan. Apply the previous sentence to yourself today. Listen for God speaking to you through the word or his Holy Spirit. He may have something for you to say to someone. It doesn’t make you better, just useful!

O Heavenly Father, you created the universe and yet you use us as your servants. We praise you for we are fearfully and wonderfully used by you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
