Psalm 140:6-8
I say to the LORD, You are my God;
give ear to the voice of my pleas for mercy, O LORD!
7 O LORD, my Lord, the strength of my salvation,
you have covered my head in the day of battle.
8 Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked;
do not further their evil plot, or they will be exalted! Selah
Our Christian wedding vows are a covenant promise where a man and woman promise to have and hold the other through all things until the end. It is concise and memorable. It is much like these verses from the psalmist. They are a concise statement of God and his covenant faithfulness. He is David’s God and God is committed to hearing his cries. The LORD promises to be his strength and shield, protecting him from evil forever and ever. David can run from Saul, from Absalom, and walk this earth, remembering God’s covenant promise in 2 Samuel 7.
That promise is that his offspring will rule forever. That is where we come in. He made a covenant promise that those who believe in Jesus, Son of David, are in covenant with God through his shed blood. The worshipers on the road on that first Palm Sunday knew this full well for they called him Son of David and cried, Hosanna, which means save us. Our comfort is remembering that Jesus Christ is our covenant head and the head of his church. He hears our cries for mercy and will never leave us nor forsake us, no matter what or who we are up against.
O Heavenly Father, you are a covenant, promise keeping God who never wavers in your care for us. May we follow suit in our worship of you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
