Revelation 17:1-2

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.”

Abandon hope, all who enter here. Those are familiar words from Dante’s Divine Comedy, in which Dante receives a guided tour of Hell from the poet Virgil. A similar sign could be posted at the entrance of wherever this is, some wilderness on earth ruled by a great prostitute. John’s guided tour showed that the kings of the earth suffered from severely misguided loyalty. They were intoxicated by the allure of this temptress and it affected their judgment, somehow making it even worse. One can scarcely imagine a world in which its leaders were so corrupt that their example caused whole societies to become corrupt. Abandon hope!

Wait. could it be that this is exactly what is happening here on earth today? Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow as we explore the possibility that the world is already under the spell of this queen of sexual immorality. Bear in mind that the Greek for “great prostitute” is basically “mega porn”. If John meant this to be interpreted as the internet, he was indeed a prophet. Entire corporations are dedicated to the fermentation of this intoxicating sin and others like it and the judgment of otherwise sensible people is compromised. There will be no compromise, however, when true judgment comes.

O Heavenly Father, you have given us all we need to know you, love you, and worship you. May we not squander it on sinful and temporary desires. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
