2 Chronicles 21;6-7

And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. 7 Yet the LORD was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and since he had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sons forever.

Everybody zones out while reading novels and, inevitably, have to go back to see who this strange new character is that we missed a few pages ago. That is what we have been learning in our midweek Bible Study. It is so easy to miss nuggets of gold when we read the Bible quickly while mentally planning the rest of our day. We miss gold like this; God’s covenant promise in the midst of great infidelity. God could have destroyed Judah except for the promise he made to David.

All this started in chapter 18, when Jehoram’s father Jehoshaphat made an alliance with the wicked king Ahab. When you are reading through 2 Chronicles, this can escape our notice but here we see the result of drifting away from our trust in God and seeking earthly security. When we play in the earth, we get muddy. But God remains the same. He promises that he is our God and we are his people. Today, may we walk in the way of the Lord because of the covenant he made with us through the shed blood of Jesus.

O Heavenly Father, you have sealed us with the blood of your Son. It is unthinkable that we would reject you in this way. Preserve us O God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
